  • July 11, 2023: Tamil Selvi, the mother of Ramesh alias Balaguru, filed a complaint against the Isha Yoga Center in Coimbatore, alleging that her son had been subjected to undue influence and subsequently became a sanyasi.
  • Complaint Details: Selvi asserted that her son was working as an engineer in Singapore, where he attended yoga sessions at the Isha Yoga Center. Upon returning to India, he unexpectedly shaved his head and joined the center as a sanyasi.
  • Prior Allegation: Selvi’s complaint follows a similar one made by retired professor Kamaraj, who claimed that his two daughters had been brainwashed and coerced into becoming sanyasins at the same center.
  • Request for Intervention: Selvi implored the District Collector, T N Hariharan, to intervene and initiate an investigation into the center’s activities. She expressed concerns about her son’s well-being, alleging that he was being exploited and that his family was denied access to him.
  • Activist Support: Selvi was accompanied by several women’s rights activists who provided support and advocacy during her interaction with the authorities.
  • Ongoing Investigation: The District Collector has acknowledged receipt of the complaint and has initiated preliminary inquiries into the matter.

These allegations raise serious concerns about the potential for undue influence and psychological coercion within spiritual and religious organizations. The authorities are duty-bound to investigate these allegations thoroughly and to take appropriate action to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals involved.
