Sustainable and Stylish Workout Brands

The fashion industry has a significant impact on the environment. The production of clothing and accessories requires vast amounts of energy and resources, and often results in the release of harmful pollutants. One of the most environmentally damaging materials used in the fashion industry is polyester, a synthetic fiber derived from petroleum.

Polyester is used in a wide range of clothing items, including sportswear. Unfortunately, the majority of sportswear on the market is made from polyester, which means that adding new pieces to already bulging drawers raises sustainability concerns.

The good news is that there are a number of sustainable activewear brands that are committed to reducing their environmental impact. These brands use eco-friendly materials, such as recycled polyester, organic cotton, and bamboo, and they often employ ethical manufacturing practices.

If you are looking for a way to reduce your environmental impact and still look your best, consider shopping from one of the following sustainable activewear brands.

Girlfriend Collective

Girlfriend Collective is a Seattle-based brand that makes sustainable activewear using recycled water bottles. According to the founders, some manufacturers purchase new water bottles to then “recycle” into fabric to cut costs – not the case at Girlfriend Collective, where all water bottles used are certified recycled, and really are being saved from landfill.

Silou is a London-based brand that strives to be sustainably conscious at every stage, from the creation and production of garments – which it calls “mindful manufacturing” – to responsible packaging.

Reformation is an LA-based brand that launched its first activewear range, Ref Active, in 2021. The collection is made from Repreve, a material that’s made from 100 per cent post-consumer recycled plastic bottles and is Oeko-Tex certified, meaning it doesn’t contain any harmful chemicals.

Here are some additional tips for shopping sustainably for activewear:

  • Look for brands that use recycled materials, such as recycled polyester, organic cotton, and bamboo.
  • Choose brands that are committed to ethical manufacturing practices.
  • Buy less, but buy better. Invest in high-quality, durable pieces that will last for years to come.
  • Wash your activewear less often. When you do wash it, use a cold water setting and a gentle detergent.
  • Recycle your old activewear.
