Gina Wilson’s Journey from Dance Student to Studio Owner

By Megan Becka

Nestled amidst the vibrant Kenmore community, The Center Dance + Yoga Studio has emerged as a beacon of movement and artistic expression. With its grand opening recently celebrated, the studio marks a significant milestone in the neighborhood’s cultural landscape.

At the helm of this transformative venture is Gina Wilson, whose passion for dance ignited at the very heart of the studio. “My dance journey here shaped my life,” says Wilson, who grew up taking classes in the hallowed halls that now house her own studio.

Despite venturing into the field of neuroscience, Wilson’s connection to her dance roots remained unwavering. She made the arduous weekly commute to the studio while pursuing her doctorate. With the studio facing uncertain times following owner Etta Mae Smith’s passing, Wilson knew her destiny lay in preserving this cherished space.

“I had to seize the opportunity to reopen this iconic neighborhood fixture and share my love of movement with others,” Wilson explains.

The Center’s Vision: A Holistic Approach to Movement and Wellness

The Center Dance + Yoga Studio embodies a comprehensive vision, embracing not only dance but also yoga and various fitness disciplines. Unlike traditional memberships, patrons can experience the joy of movement without long-term commitments, opting instead for flexible per-class options.

Wilson’s team of ten skilled instructors offers a diverse range of classes, from Zumba’s high-energy beats to the meditative flow of yoga. Specialized classes, such as ballroom dancing and trendy TikTok dance parties, cater to the dynamic interests of the community.

The Center’s commitment to inclusivity extends to its class offerings. Yoga classes are tailored to different age groups, from kid-friendly sessions to adult-oriented classes suitable for those over ten. A unique “happy hour” yoga option offers a refreshing twist for adults.

Aspiring young dancers can immerse themselves in the world of tap, jazz, and ballet through summer dance camps. The studio’s Christmas workshop combines the joy of dance with festive crafts, creating unforgettable memories for children.

Beyond its physical presence, The Center has swiftly become a vital thread in the fabric of the community. “The Center is a beacon for the growing arts and music scene here,” remarks Josh Gippin, Executive Director of the Better Kenmore Community Development Corporation.

With the anticipated arrival of Miller South School for the Visual and Performing Arts nearby, the timing of The Center’s establishment couldn’t be more auspicious. “It’s a perfect complement to the neighborhood’s future as a performing arts hub,” adds Gippin.
