The Pandan Club: Chennai’s First Peranakan Restaurant

The Pandan Club, Chennai’s first Peranakan restaurant, opened its doors just a fortnight ago. The restaurant is a joint venture between Sashi Cheliah, winner of Season 10 of Masterchef Australia, and Manoj Padmanaban, owner of Big Bandha, an experiential dining company.

Peranakan cuisine is a fusion of Chinese, Malay, and Indonesian flavors. It is characterized by its bold flavors and use of spices. The Pandan Club’s menu features a variety of Peranakan dishes, including satay, rendang, and laksa.

Cheliah and Padmanaban first met in 2019, when they collaborated on a fundraising event featuring a sold-out eight-course dinner. They quickly realized that Chennai was ready for a Peranakan restaurant.

The Pandan Club is located in a building owned by another of the restaurant’s partners, Muruga Bharathi. The restaurant’s interior is designed to reflect the Peranakan culture, with colorful tiles and Peranakan-inspired artwork.

Cheliah said that he is excited to bring Peranakan cuisine to Chennai. “I think Chennai is ready for something new and different,” he said. “Peranakan cuisine is a delicious and unique blend of flavors that I think people will really enjoy.”

Padmanaban said that he is confident that The Pandan Club will be a success. “We have a great team in place, and we are committed to providing our guests with a unique and memorable dining experience,” he said.

Expansion Plans

Cheliah and Padmanaban are already planning to expand The Pandan Club to other cities in India and abroad. They are considering opening outlets in Singapore, Dubai, and Mumbai.

“We are entrepreneurs who are extremely cautious about quality output,” said Padmanaban. “For our next outlet, we are thinking of either Singapore or Dubai before coming back to other cities in India.”

Pop-Ups and Events

Cheliah will be visiting The Pandan Club regularly to keep an eye on things and to host pop-ups and events. He will also be using the restaurant to promote his other ventures, such as his cookbook, Gaja.

“Every time I’m coming to Pandan club, I’m going to make it a point to go to other parts of India to do events and promote Pandan Club and Gaja,” said Cheliah. “Manoj and I were also discussing pop-ups in the near future. We are definitely looking to bring the Pandan Club to other places.”

Conclusion

The Pandan Club is a welcome addition to the Chennai dining scene. The restaurant’s unique cuisine and ambiance are sure to make it a popular destination for both locals and tourists alike.
