BBMP Reopens Flyover

On Monday, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) reopened one side of the Sivananda Circle flyover to regular traffic. However, the BBMP acknowledged the presence of undulations (uneven surfaces) on the flyover.

Quality of Work Meets Standards

Despite the undulations, the BBMP maintains that the quality of the work on the flyover conforms to established standards and specifications. Following a report in DH about the “back-breaking” flyover, the civic body has promised an independent third-party inspection of the work’s quality.

Asphalt Consolidation and Undulations

According to M. Lokesh, Chief Engineer (Projects Central) at BBMP, asphalt surfaces consolidate by approximately 5 mm after being put into use. To accommodate this consolidation, the asphalting work on the flyover was done 5 mm above the levels of expansion joints, which are spaced 20 m apart.

Consequently, Lokesh indicated that undulations are primarily noticeable at the expansion joints, leading to bumps on the flyover. However, he expects the undulations to diminish naturally after 15-30 days of regular use.

Third-Party Inspection

The BBMP has instructed Infra Support Engineering Consultants to conduct an inspection and submit a report on the work’s quality.

Vertical Clearance

Regarding concerns about the Sivananda flyover’s vertical clearance being only 4.5 meters, the BBMP stated that the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) and the High Court have approved the vertical height.

The BBMP explained that the movement of trailers and heavy vehicles is restricted within the Central Business District (CBD) and the Outer Ring Road area. Consequently, TAC recommended that all structures within the ORR limits, including flyovers and underpasses, be designed with a minimum vertical clearance of 4.5 meters.

The BBMP emphasized that corrective measures will be implemented if the undulations persist beyond a reasonable timeframe to minimize potential discomfort for motorists.
