Introduction

As the summer solstice approaches and the United Nations International Day of Yoga is celebrated worldwide, Seoul unveils an enchanting new initiative: Gwanghwamun Moonlight Yoga. This series of evening yoga sessions offers a harmonious blend of stress relief, fitness, and tranquility.

Event Details

From June 27 to August 31, every Tuesday and Thursday evening, Gwanghwamun Square will transform into a sanctuary for 100 participants. The one-hour sessions commencing at 7:30 p.m. are open to all ages and skill levels, welcoming both yoga enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

Origins and Purpose

Gwanghwamun Moonlight Yoga is spearheaded by the square’s operation division under the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s Balanced Development Headquarters. Inspired by the United Nations International Day of Yoga, which coincides with the Summer Solstice in Korea, this event aims to provide an escape from urban stressors and promote physical and mental well-being.

Ceremony and Activities

On June 21, an opening ceremony will be held on the northern section of the square. Participants can expect endurance yoga challenges, interactive quiz shows, and a mesmerizing musical performance by a Korean traditional “gugak” fusion band. The ceremony will conclude with the distribution of yoga tops to all attendees.

Pre-Programs and Rewards

From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on event days, visitors to Gwanghwamun Square can preview the moonlight yoga sessions and participate in social media campaigns. Additionally, pre-online bookers can accumulate points during the campaign and redeem them for exclusive yoga merchandise, including outfits, mats, and tumblers.

Statement from the Organizer

“Gwanghwamun Moonlight Yoga is an invitation to experience Seoul’s captivating summer nights through the transformative practice of yoga,” said Yeo Jang-kwon, chief of the Balanced Development Headquarters. “Participants will immerse themselves in a vibrant urban night scene while fostering tranquility and well-being.”

Yoga as a Cultural Phenomenon

Beyond a mere sport, yoga has evolved into a multifaceted cultural activity. As MBN, a local TV network co-organizing the event with the Seoul Metropolitan Government, emphasizes, this initiative aims to provide a therapeutic and community-building space amidst the high-tension pace of city life.
