India: A Global Partner and President of the G20

India’s Role as a Global Friend

In a speech to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), India’s External Affairs Minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, highlighted India’s evolution into a “Vishwa Mitra” (global friend).

Jaishankar stressed India’s commitment to addressing global concerns and promoting cooperation with diverse partners. This approach is a departure from India’s earlier non-aligned stance.

India’s Presidency of the G20

India has assumed the presidency of the G20 at a time of global turmoil. Jaishankar noted the exceptional responsibility India feels in this role.

India’s G20 presidency has prioritized the concerns of developing countries, including those of the Global South. India has also promoted the inclusion of the African Union as a permanent member of the G20.

India’s Global Agenda

India’s global agenda includes the following:

  • Addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development
  • Promoting digital cooperation and innovation
  • Combating terrorism and transnational crime
  • Strengthening regional cooperation and security

India’s foreign policy is guided by the principle of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (the world is one family). This principle reflects India’s belief in the interconnectedness of all nations and its commitment to global cooperation.
