The Impact of Sudarshan Kriya Yoga on Physician Well-being

Introduction

Physician burnout is a serious problem that has a profound impact on patient care and the healthcare system as a whole. It is estimated that physician burnout costs the U.S. healthcare system approximately $4.6 billion annually in lost productivity.

Methods

A randomized clinical trial was conducted to assess and compare a Sudarshan Kriya Yoga online program to a stress management education online program in reducing psychological distress and improving wellness among 129 physicians in Turkey, Germany, and Dubai.

Results

The results showed that compared with physicians in the stress management education group, those in the Sudarshan Kriya Yoga group reported significantly less stress, depression, and insomnia. Additionally, physicians in the Sudarshan Kriya Yoga group reported significant improvement in professional fulfillment and significant decreases in work exhaustion, interpersonal disengagement, and burnout.

Discussion

The findings of this study suggest that Sudarshan Kriya Yoga may be an effective, practical, and safe approach to improve physician well-being. Further research is needed to better understand the physiological and psychological mechanisms underlying the effects of Sudarshan Kriya Yoga.

Conclusion

Physician burnout is a serious problem, but it is one that can be addressed. Sudarshan Kriya Yoga is a promising intervention that has the potential to improve physician well-being and reduce burnout.
