Introduction

As the recipient of a recently published memoir, I was surprised and concerned by the author’s accounts of engaging in various New Age practices. While it is common for individuals to share their experiences, I found the inclusion of energy healing, horoscope reading, and psychic consultations to be questionable, especially considering the author’s Catholic upbringing.

The Dangers of New Age Practices

Many devout Christians are unwittingly falling into the trap of New Age practices, believing they can harmonize such activities with their faith. However, these practices often contradict fundamental Catholic principles and can have detrimental effects on our spiritual well-being.

Protecting the Mind and Soul

Spiritual attacks originate in the mind. It is crucial to seek the protection of guardian angels through regular prayer, as these entities can safeguard our thoughts and imaginations. Indulging in unholy ideas or images can lead to a cascade of negative consequences, paving the way for evil to enter our lives.

To prevent this, practice “custody of the mind” by filling it with virtue, beauty, and truth. The saying “garbage in, garbage out” holds true; our surroundings and experiences profoundly shape our beliefs and behaviors.

Recognizing New Age Influences

Satan also targets our emotions, leading to diabolic obsession. This state can drive individuals to participate in unconventional therapies like acupuncture, seeking desperate relief from pain.

Identifying New Age practices can be challenging, as they have often become integrated into modern society. Some common examples include centering prayer, yoga, psychics, seances, Eastern meditation, Reiki, qi gong, astrology, and occult practices such as Wicca.

Avoiding Unhealthy Curiosity

Scripture warns against engaging in these practices, as they lead us away from God and truth. Seeking alternative spiritual remedies or healings implies a desire for power and a wish to appease hidden forces, which contradicts our reverence for God.

A sound Christian approach involves trusting in Divine Providence and relinquishing unhealthy curiosities about the future. Instead, we should turn to authentic Christian meditation and contemplation to find fulfillment in God’s presence and love.
