KCBC’s Cautions and the Debate on Yoga’s Religious Affiliation

Following International Day of Yoga, the Kerala Catholic Bishops Council (KCBC) has cautioned its followers to exercise caution in their practice of yoga. This has sparked a discussion about whether yoga is inherently religious and whether it should be classified as a Hindu or Christian practice.

“Be aware that you may be attracted to Hinduism when you practise yoga,” cautions the KCBC.

The KCBC guidelines emphasize that certain practices associated with yoga, such as chanting prayers of other faiths or meditating on religious icons, are unacceptable for Christians. Consuming food offerings made to idols is also deemed contrary to Christian beliefs.

The Christian Perspective on Prayer and Meditation

Christianity emphasizes prayer as a direct communication with God, while yoga often involves communion with the inner self. According to Christian theology, prayer involves humble acceptance of God’s will, not manipulation through meditation.

Yoga as a Practice for Peace and Well-being

Catholic nun Sr. Infant Tresa believes yoga offers benefits for peace of mind and body. She advocates for a Christian approach to yoga, separate from group practices where religions intermingle. Proponents of this view argue that yoga’s ancient origins were intended to promote inner tranquility, not religious affiliation.

“Yoga can be practised in a Christian way also… [but] It should not be compared to any religion,” says Sr. Tresa.

Yoga as a Holistic Approach to Life

Yoga guru S. Rajendran considers yoga a comprehensive lifestyle and science that transcends religious boundaries. He emphasizes the goal of elevating one’s consciousness and overall well-being through the practice.

“The ultimate goal of yoga is to raise the standard of living of the practitioner through heightening his level of consciousness,” says S. Rajendran.

Balancing Faith and Yoga Practice

Catholic practitioners seeking to incorporate yoga into their lives must consider the guidelines provided by the KCBC. Respecting the boundaries set by their faith while incorporating the benefits of yoga requires thoughtful navigation and adherence to Christian principles.
