On the occasion of the International Yoga Day, celebrated on June 21, 2023, at Annamalai University in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu Governor R. Ravi addressed the attendees, highlighting the state’s significant role in promoting yoga.

Balancing Progress with Health Concerns

Governor Ravi acknowledged Tamil Nadu’s status as a progressive state, credited with spreading the practice of yoga throughout the country. However, he also expressed concern that the state has the highest prevalence of diabetes, a chronic and debilitating condition.

Emphasizing the non-infectious nature of diabetes, Ravi stated that the condition can be managed and prevented through proper lifestyle practices. He urged individuals to adopt healthy lifestyles to combat this growing health issue.

Yoga: A Path to Wellness

Ravi stressed the importance of yoga as an accessible and effective means to maintain good health. He shared his personal experience of practicing yoga regularly, attributing his relatively good health to this practice.

Ravi encouraged yoga practitioners and students to share their knowledge and skills in rural areas, where access to health care may be limited. He emphasized that yoga is an economical and easily accessible method of staying healthy.

Tracing Yoga’s Origins

The Governor highlighted the significance of Tamil Nadu as the birthplace of yoga, tracing its origins to the ancient saint Thirumoolar and his contributions to the practice. He also acknowledged the contributions of Rishi Patanjali in codifying yoga in Sanskrit.

Ravi emphasized the responsibility of yoga teachers and practitioners in Tamil Nadu to continue the legacy of yoga by evolving the practice to its highest potential.

Collaboration and Support

The event was attended by Annamalai University Vice-Chancellor R. M. Kathiresan and Deans from various faculties, demonstrating the university’s commitment to promoting yoga and health initiatives.

Conclusion

Governor Ravi’s speech on International Yoga Day highlighted the paradox facing Tamil Nadu. While the state leads India in spreading the transformative practice of yoga, it also grapples with a high prevalence of diabetes. By embracing yoga and promoting healthy lifestyles, Tamil Nadu can strive to balance progress with the health of its citizens.
