Winter Dance Team – Flag Color Guard

The South Tama High School Board has approved the formation of a new Winter Dance Team – Flag Color Guard. This innovative club combines the elements of flag twirling and color guard choreography with various dance styles, offering a unique and exciting extracurricular activity for students.

Molly Tafta, a third-grade teacher at South Tama Elementary, will serve as the volunteer coach for the flag team. Up to 20 students will comprise the group, including both male and female participants.

The team will enhance the school’s athletic events by performing at halftime during basketball games, approximately twice a month. Additionally, they will participate in winter color guard competitions and aim to perform beyond the district when possible. The investment of $250 by the school board will cover the necessary flags for the team.

Yoga Club

The South Tama High School Board has also approved the establishment of a new Yoga Club. This club provides students with an opportunity to engage in yoga practices, promoting relaxation and stress reduction.

Dixie Forcht, secondary teacher librarian and district assessment coordinator, will sponsor the club. The club’s inception was initiated by students Kaisha Wanatee and Richelle Werner, who gathered over 150 signatures in support of its formation.

Forcht intends to utilize the Little Theatre or Commons area for club meetings, which will take place before classes commence in the morning, likely twice a week. Students are responsible for providing their own yoga mats.

Additional School Board Actions

  • Nicole Hitchcock was hired as an elementary special education paraprofessional.
  • Superintendent Jared Smith proposed adding a guidance counselor position at the South Tama Middle School, citing the high student-to-counselor ratio.
