Measures to Preserve Historical Integrity

In the wake of recent incidents involving unauthorized yoga activities at the Taj Mahal, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has announced the implementation of more stringent measures to protect the monument’s integrity. The ASI’s Agra office has confirmed the placement of signboards throughout the complex, warning visitors against such practices.

ASI’s Response to Unauthorized Yoga

Subsequent to the viral distribution of a video depicting five women performing Surya Namaskar on the red sandstone platform in front of the monument, the ASI received written apologies from the individuals involved. The authorities have reiterated that yoga activities are strictly prohibited at the Taj Mahal. This prohibition extends to all areas within the complex, including the vicinity of the main mausoleum, where photography is also restricted.

The Rules and Their Enforcement

While photography is permitted in areas outside the main mausoleum, the use of video cameras is prohibited beyond a designated boundary, encompassing the red sandstone platform. Despite repeated warnings, many visitors disregard this regulation by carrying mobile phones into the restricted zone.

The ASI has acknowledged the difficulty in enforcing this rule due to the widespread use of cell phones. However, the authorities have emphasized that visitors are expected to adhere to the guidelines in order to preserve the historical and cultural significance of the Taj Mahal.

Industry Perspective

Members of the local tourism industry have questioned the rationale behind the restriction on yoga, considering its non-commercial and innocuous nature. Prahalad Agarwal, president of the Agra Tourist Welfare Chamber, has pointed out that numerous such videos are circulated online, highlighting the challenge the ASI faces in combating the violation of its rules.

Conclusion

The ASI remains committed to safeguarding the Taj Mahal from activities that compromise its historical and architectural integrity. The implementation of signboards and the enforcement of existing regulations are crucial steps towards this goal.
